We all know its an equation of calories consumed and calories burned. But if youve tried reducing your calorie intake and increasing your exercise without effect, maybe its time to look a little bit deeper. We all burn calories at a different rate, known as your metabolic rate. Our metabolic rate slows as we age, so if we dont exercise more or eat less as we age then we will put on weight. Regular exercise increases your metabolic rate even when you are resting, which is why it is important to use the Double whammy of exercise and controlled diet. However there are other measures that you can take to increase your metabolic rate. NOTE: Before following any dietary advice, please consult your GP if you suffer from any health problems or are currently taking any medication. With sudden weight, gain especially when accompanied by tiredness, you should always see your doctor first to rule out possible medical conditions such as Hypothyroid or diabetes. Simple Steps to Increase your Metabolic Rate Exercise for 20-30 minutes before meals and eat within 30 minutes of finishing when your metabolism is high and it will burn more calories. This could be brisk walking, dancing or even vigorous cleaning. Drink nettle tea. This supports metabolism and reduces water retention. Eat a healthy, nutritious diet including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, pulses. This will supply the nutrients needed to boost cell energy and charge up metabolism. Take a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement. Take a supplement of Co enzyme Q10 combined with a supplement of carnitine and a good quality fish oil. Co enzyme Q10 stimulates the metabolism as does carnitine, fish and flax oils. They are most effective taken together. Drink 2 cups of green tea with ginseng daily. Ginseng supports the metabolism and help the liver to break down fats. Green tea aids weight loss. Eat and drink soya products. Diet for your Health and your figure Along with the above measures you also need to ensure you have a healthy diet that provides all the nutrients in abundance and staves off your hunger. Follow these guidelines: Avoid sugar and foods and drinks containing it. It slows the metabolism, robs the body of valuable minerals and upsets the bodys blood sugar management leading to hunger pangs. It also encourages water retention. Drink 1.5 2 litres of water daily. It is a good appetite suppressant and helps the body detoxify. Avoid refined carbohydrates (pasta, white bread, white rice, cakes and pastries). The body quickly converts these into sugar and then fat. Eat the right fats. The good fats in avocados, fish, seeds and nuts actually help weight loss. Avoid saturated fats (butter, lard, cheese, cream and fatty meat) and hydrogenated fats and oils. Eat little and often to keep your blood sugars even. Never skip breakfast and dont eat late at night. Avoid salt and salty foods (crisps and snacks, cheese, ham, bacon). Excess salt encourages water retention. Eat complex carbohydrates at every meal, e.g. porridge oats, brown rice, wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, oatcakes, dark rye bread, beans and lentils. These keep you feeling full and provide valuable fibre. Avoid stimulants (alcohol, tea, coffee, chocolate and smoking). These upset your blood sugar levels and lead to sugar cravings. A!"#$% Countering the Excesses of ChristmasThe two things we all tend to over-indulge in over Christmas are alcohol and sweet foods (cake, pudding, mince pies, chocolates). These things all create a yo-yo effect on your blood sugar levels that leave you craving for more half an hour or so after consumption. So the key to getting yourself back on track after Christmas is to follow a diet that will even out your blood sugars and remove those cravings. It will also leave you feeling more energetic and ready to get down to the gym to tone that body ready for summer clothes. Here are some simple guidelines to follow that with even out your blood sugars and help you lose weight: Drink hot water with lemon juice. Drink this first thing in the morning and when you feel a craving for something sweet. It is very cleansing and increases your vitamin C intake, which will help protect you from colds and flu. For a sweet fix eat fruit or dried fruit or a couple of squares of dark chocolate (70% cocoa). Dried apricots are particularly good for women as they contain iron.
